Biography (PSA): February 2013
Daryl Selby has become a firm fixture in England team line-ups in recent years – but the 30-year-old from Essex established his national credentials in emphatic style in 2011 when he became the British National champion for the first time, after a stunning final upset over the then world number one Nick Matthew.
Selby has made rapid progress since breaking into the world top 30 at the beginning of 2009. Only 14 months later, in April 2010, Selby burst into the top ten to celebrate a career-high No9 ranking. It was just over a year after he went full-time that Selby clinched his first Tour title at the 2005 La Sportheque Pro-Am in Quebec, Canada, where he was the third seed.
“There have probably been quite a few turning points in my career – winning my first PSA title was great and also winning the British National Championships was another big achievement for me,” said Chelmsford-based Selby. 2012 started well for Selby in New York where, unseeded, he reached the semi-finals of the Tournament of Champions – his best ever success in a PSA World Series event.
His breakthrough came in the opening round where he recorded his first ever win over Egypt’s then world No5 Karim Darwish. Later in the month he fulfilled his seeding in the Grasshopper Cup in Switzerland to net the 11th Tour title of his career in his 17th final. “So far this year my biggest success was reaching the semi finals of the Tournament of Champions in New York,” said Selby. “Also winning the Grasshopper Cup in Switzerland – as I hadn’t won a title for over a year previously!”
Selby went on to make the quarter-finals of the NetSuite Open in San Francisco and the last 16 round of the Hong Kong Open – all of which saw him finish the year in the world top 10. His 2013 campaign got off to a rocky start, however, with a first round defeat in the Swedish Open – to fast-rising Egyptian Tarek Momen.
“I’d like to win another PSA title and make another World Series semi final where I can give it a proper go,” said Selby when asked his aims for the year ahead. “Golf is my other passion at the moment and I’m playing nearly as much golf as squash!”
Now married, Daryl and wife Lucie celebrated the birth of their first child, son Noah, in January this year.
